We are celebrating the Week of LOVE, starting with advice on a sweet tradition:
Dr. Avocado: I received a beautiful box of chocolates for Valentine’s Day and my cat won’t stop sniffing around trying to bite one. I have heard that it’s dangerous for kitties to eat it, is this true?
I will say that not being able to eat chocolate is one of the cruelest tricks that cats living with humans have to endure. The smell is intoxicating and the expressions of bliss that come out of your mouths as you’re savoring them are enough to turn us into drooling beggars. But, alas, we should never know. The brave ones that have tried have paid a steep prize.
Chocolate, like coffee and soda, has caffeine as one of its ingredients. It gives you the “kick” that you crave but for us the adrenaline is too much sending our nervous system into hyper drive. It also contains something called theobromine that mixed with the caffeine causes some serious symptoms like:
• Vomiting and diarrhea
• Increased heart rate and reflex responses
• Seizures
• In extreme cases, coma and even death
In the case of chocolate vs cat, stick to chicken.
PS: OH! and allowing us to play with the chocolate wrapping paper is also toxic. The aluminum foil damages our teeth.

Estamos celebrando la semana del AMOR y comenzamos con un consejo para esa dulce tradición:
Dr. Avocado: Me han regalado una caja de chocolates por San Valentín y mi gato no para de olerla tratando de llevarse uno. He escuchado que es muy dañino para los gatitos, ¿es cierto?
Tengo que admitir que el no poder saborear el chocolate es uno de los trucos más crueles de la vida del gato que comparte con el humano. El olor es alucinante y las expresiones deliciosas que salen de sus bocas al ingerirlos nos convierten en mendigos babosos. Desgraciadamente, nunca sabremos a qué saben. Aquéllos que lo han intentado han pagado un precio muy alto.
El chocolate, como el café y la soda, tiene cafeína como uno de sus ingredientes. A ustedes les da el impulso que tanto disfrutan, pero a nuestro sistema nervioso lo envía a la estratósfera. Además viene cargado de teobromina, que al mezclarse con la cafeína causas síntomas serios como:
• Vómitos y diarrea
• Acelera nuestras palpitaciones a niveles anormales además de causar reacciones musculares involuntarias
• Temblores
• En casos extremos lleva a la coma y hasta la muerte
En el caso del chocolate vs el gato, gana el pollo.
PD: ¡AH! Y por si pensabas calmarlo entregándole el empaque para jugar, mejor no lo hagas. El papel de aluminio es tóxico para nuestros dientes.
