Thinking about fostering cats? Read before you bring that kitty home

Girl, fostering is quite honestly, a selfless act of love. Adopting is always the main event, but fostering allows the cat to “come into her own” as you say and showing her true colors, dazzle those humans looking to find their new member of the family. It helps shelters and rescue operations in two important issues: living in a home environment teaches the cat to socialize better (in turn makes the kitty more adorable, I mean, adoptable) plus empties a space in their crowded area to be occupied by a new would-be-adopted feline. A foster parent is one awesome human!

But getting into it is not easy. You must be prepared mentally, physically and (the harder one) economically for the task ahead. Before you show up at the shelter and declare “I want to foster bottle babies!” check out this list:
• Do you have a private room for the new arrivals? Even if you don’t have other pets, the cats should be kept in the room for a while. That will help them acclimate better to their new environment before venturing out to the rest of the house.
• Can you afford it? ‘Cause maybe when you first bring the cat home you get some food and litter from the shelter/rescue, but after that you are on your own. We may not be an expensive kind of animal, but there are some basic needs that have to be provided.
• Is your family ready for the endeavor? Fostering is not just your responsibility it includes the whole gang. If you have babies or small kids, your plate is probably too full. Come back once they get a little older. Trust me, there will be kitties waiting.
• Bottle baby sounds too cute… what is it? These are the sweet kittens that sadly lost their mommy too soon and still need help feeding and learning their bodily routines. The babies feed every 2-6 hours so whoever fosters them has to have the time for it.
• How long does the fostering last? Well, how many cats can you have? Ha ha! Just kidding, (but not) because the real answer is “dude, nobody knows”. You can have the perfect cat, social and playful and cute and ready to be adopted but the family is nowhere to be found. Or after training her you decide that you can’t live without her and decide to officially adopt the lucky feline. If you can’t keep her any longer, the cat can be passed to another foster home or back to the shelter, none of them easy decisions.

If after all this you decide that fostering is in your future, THANK YOU! Your services are very much needed. You are helping cats get a second chance in life. The rewards may not fill your bank account but will boost your morale and pump your heart with purrs, love and happiness. Go ahead I dare you not to smile.

Acoger un animalito es sin duda un acto de puro amor. Adoptar es siempre el evento principal, pero acogerlo en casa le da al minino la oportunidad de desarrollar su verdadera personalidad y hacerlo más atractivo para los humanos que lo deseen añadir a su vida. También ayuda a los refugios y las operaciones de rescate de dos maneras: que el gato aprenda a socializar con humanos y otros animales (haciéndolo más adorable, perdón, adoptable) además de que crea cabida en el refugio para traer a otro gatito en busca de hogar. ¡Es sin duda un ser humano espectacular!

Pero entrarle al asunto no es fácil. Debes estar preparado mental, física y (la más difícil) monetariamente para la hazaña. O sea, que antes de llegar al refugio y gritar “¡Quiero acoger gatitos recién nacidos!” verifica la siguiente lista:
• ¿Tienes un cuarto separado para los nuevos inquilinos? Aunque no tengas otras mascotas en casa, es importante mantener a los gatos acogidos en un lugar específico por unas semanas. Esto los ayuda a acostumbrarse a su nuevo ambiente antes de aventurarse a conocer el resto del hogar.
• ¿Lo puedes pagar? Porque quizás cuando de primera intención el refugio te regale algo de comida y arena, pero luego de eso sale de tu bolsillo. No seremos muy costosos como mascotas, pero tenemos ciertas necesidades básicas que debes suministrar.
• ¿Tu familia está lista para la aventura? Acoger no es sólo tu responsabilidad, incluye a toda la ganga. Si tienes bebés o niños pequeños, tu vida está bastante complicada ya. Regresa cuando estén mayores. Te aseguro que habrán gatitos esperando por ti.
• Los gatitos recién nacidos son hermosos, ¿cómo se cuidan? Estos bebés han perdido a su mamá muy temprano y todavía no se valen por sí mismos. Necesitan ser alimentados con botella cada 2-6 horas dependiendo de cuán bebés sean y enseñarles a realizar sus rutinas corporales. Es de vital importancia que la persona encargada les pueda dar el tiempo que requieren.
• ¿Cuánto tiempo tengo al gato acogido? Bueeeeno, ¿cuántos gatos quieres en casa? Ja, ja, ja es broma (pero no), la contestación real es “nadie sabe”. Puedes tener a la gatita perfecta en casa, sociable, juguetona, hermosa y lista para ser adoptada pero nadie viene por ella. O que luego de pasar tanto tiempo con ella decides que la quieres adoptar oficialmente pues tú eres la persona perfecta para la minina. Pero también está el caso de que simplemente no puedes seguir esperando, en estas ocasiones hablas con el refugio y usualmente la pasan a otra familia o de vuelta con ellos hasta que consiga su nuevo hogar; ninguna de las dos son decisiones fáciles de tomar.

Si luego de todo esto decides que todavía quieres acoger un gato en casa, ¡MIL GRACIAS! Tus servicios son necesitados. Estás dándole una segunda oportunidad de vida a un minino que busca un hogar. La recompensa no llenará tu cuenta bancaria, pero te hará sentir como un superhéroe y llenará tu corazón de ronroneos, amor y felicidad. ¡A que no puedes parar de sonreír!
