Cat eyes: superior vision

Continuing our study of all the feline’s senses, we now explore the most stylish and elegant of them all: cat eyes. Positioned deep in the face and looking straight to the front to help us calculate the distance between us and prey, while not being so obvious to predator’s searches. But of course the eyes’ most famous trait is the size.

Yes, they are a tad too big (in fact if humans’ eyes were that size, they will measure 8″ in diameter, covering half their faces!) but they act as an example of “size does matters”: a bigger cornea lets in more light for better vision. Our peripheral vision is beyond awesome, our close ups? not as good. That is why kitty can easily find the bird up in the tree… but can’t seem to recognize the kibble right in front of her.

Superhero gadgets:

• Our pupils are elliptical instead of round so they open and close faster depending on the amount of light in the room.
• Cat’s night vision is legendary, including in its roster a glow in the dark effect! This one caused by (open your Hogwarts dictionary to page 526) the tapetum lucidum, a layer of cells that live behind the retina and act like a mirror, reflecting more light so we can see clearer at night. We still can’t see in total darkness, but we act like we do.
• Do humans have an extra eyelid? Bummer. We do! It’s really a membrane – nictitating membrane to be specific – and this one rests in the corner of the eye until needed. At that moment, swoosh! it slides to protect the eye from being poked by alien objects as well as to keep that eyeball lubricated and clean.

I know what you’re thinking: “sure it’s all cool, but can you see colors?” The answer, of course, is YES (though not as bright as you do), gotta give you something to brag about.

Ojos del gato: visión superior

Continuando con nuestro estudio de los sentidos gatunos, exploramos el más elegante y estilizado de todos: los ojos del gato. Su posicionamiento bien al centro de la cara y mirando justo de frente ayuda a calcular las distancias exactas entre el felino y su presa sin ser tan fáciles de encontrar por sus depredadores. Claro, su característica más conocida es el tamaño: cierto, son un poquito grandes para la cara (si los de los humanos tuviesen el mismo tamaño medirían 8″ de diámetro, ¡cubriendo la mitad de la cara!) pero tienen su propósito, córnea más grande = más luz entra al ojo para ver mejor. Nuestra visión de lejos es espectacular, ¿la de cerca? no tan fabulosa. Por esto es que tu gata puede encontrar fácilmente al pájaro escondido en el árbol, pero ni se entera de que tiene un bocadito frente a su cara.

• Nuestras pupilas son elípticas en lugar de redondas para que abran y cierren con facilidad dependiendo de la cantidad de luz en el lugar donde nos encontramos.
• La visión nocturna del gato es legendaria, incluye entre sus efectos el ¡brillar en la oscuridad! Esta es causada por (abran sus diccionarios de Hogwarts dictionary en la página 526) el tapetum lucidum, una capa de células que habita detrás de la retina que actúa como un espejo reflejando más luz para que podamos ver mejor cuando hay muy poca luz. Aunque no podemos ver en total oscuridad, actuamos como si pudiésemos. Hay que mantener la reputación.
• ¿Los humanos tienen un tercer párpado? Pobrecitos. ¡Nosotros sí! Es realmente una membrana – nictitating membrane para ser más específicos – y esta se guarda en la esquina del ojo hasta que la necesitamos. En ese momento ¡swoosh! se desliza para proteger el ojo de cualquier objeto que quiera hacerle daño como también para lubricar y mantenerlo limpio.

Ya sé lo que estás pensando: “muy bien, pero ¿ves en colores?” Y la contestación es SI (aunque no tan brillante como tú), te teníamos que dejar algo de qué alardear.
