Not spaying your kitty? Watch out!

It is Spay Week and Dr. Avocado has a lot to say about this:

Dr. Avocado: My kitty is strictly indoor, do I still have to spay her?
Let me tell you about your sweet non-fixed kitty. You think she is looking at the birds out the window? In her mind she is designing the best plan to escape and find her Romeo. She is obviously still young and hasn’t started her singing career yet but just you wait, there will come a day when her strange wailings will make your skin crawl while keeping you up at night and there is nothing you can do to calm her down. Because she doesn’t want a treat or your bed, she wants a boyfriend NOW.

And the boys outside are certainly hearing her call while planning their entrance into your backyard where, after chanting loudly and leaving the territory marked with ammonia, will fight to the death in order to decide who is worthy of rescuing the locked-up princess.

Because that is our mission in life: to reproduce as much as we can without thinking about the consequences of our actions. There are millions of us in the world just wandering around, looking for a territory to call our own until we hear once more the call of the girl.

Our reality has changed. Now we live among you, in your homes and neighborhoods. And we like it. Who wouldn’t? Now we have safe homes and food available everyday. We are pampered like kings and queens, as it should be. You claimed us as your “pets” and we obey, but in order for this relationship to work, you have to become a responsible guardian and attend to our basic needs. Spaying your cat will give her a longer life, a healthier life. She doesn’t feel the need to escape and find a mate; and she won’t be bringing into the world more kitties that will most likely end up in an already crowded shelter, begging for a home. Let’s stop that now.

Esta semana hablamos sobre la importancia de la esterilización y el Dr. Avocado tiene mucho que decir sobre el tema:

Dr. Avocado: Mi gatita vive dentro de casa. Nunca sale. ¿Necesito esterilizarla?
Te voy a explicar lo que tu gatita hermosa está viviendo. ¿Tú crees que pasa el día mirando pajaritos por la ventana? En su mente está deliberando el mejor plan para escapar de la casa y encontrarse con su Romeo. Obviamente es joven y no ha comenzado su carrera como cantante, pero dale tiempo, llegará el día que sus gritos estremecedores te asusten cual película de misterio, evitando exitosamente que puedas dormir en paz. No hay nada que puedas hacer para calmarla. No quiere bocaditos ni dormir en tu cama: quiere a su novio AHORA.

Y los mininos afuera están atentos escuchando sus llamados, planeando entrar a tu patio a maullido limpio, dejando el lugar marcado como suyo con amonia, peleando hasta el fin para ganarse el amor de tu gatita.

Porque esa es nuestra misión de vida: reproducirnos lo más que podamos sin pensar en las consequencias de nuestros actos. Por esto hay millones de gatos merodeando por el mundo en búsqueda de un territorio propio donde descansar hasta que la gata vuelva a llamar.

Nuestra realidad ha cambiado. Ahora vivimos junto con ustedes, en sus casas y vecindarios. Y nos gusta. ¿Cómo no? Tenemos casas seguras y comida disponible todos los días. Nos tratan como reyes y reinas, como debe ser. Nos llaman “mascotas” y lo aceptamos. Pero para que la relación funcione, les toca a ustedes asumir ciertas responsabilidades. Esterilizar a tu gata le dará una vida más larga y saludable. No sentirá la necesidad de salir a buscar novio ni traerá al mundo más gatitos que de seguro, terminarán en el refugio donde ya no caben más, tratando de encontrar un hogar. Detengamos el círculo vicioso.
